In our ministry and mission work, we take care to honor the wisdom, traditions, and customs of our local partners in ministry. Our mission efforts include: Birchgrove Apartments: Located next to the church building, Birchgrove is a program for people with chronic mental illness. The program was begun and the land donated by Plymouth. Grand Rapids Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN): Plymouth is a host congregation, housing homeless families in the church building on a rotating basis, and supporting a day center. United Church Outreach Ministry: Plymouth provides major support to this poverty-fighting ministry of the Grand West Association of the Michigan Conference of the United Church of Christ. Denominational Ministries: Plymouth has been recognized as one of the most generous churches in the denomination for its giving in the U.S. and overseas. Community Groups: Plymouth provides space to several community group meetings including two Alcoholics Anonymous groups and an Overeaters Anonymous group. Justice and Peace: In the fall of 2001 Plymouth launched its “Wage Peace” campaign. Five billboards contained the message and over 1,000 “Wage Peace” yard signs have been distributed. Plymouth members continue their efforts to promote peace with justice. Open and Affirming: It is church policy, by vote of the congregation, and church practice to welcome Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender persons into the full life and ministry of the congregation. The Open and Affirming (ONA) Committtee helps Plymouth members to understand and be involved in GLBT issues. Plymouth also hosts a Transgender Support Group. Re-Member: Since 2001, Plymouth members and friends have actively promoted and supported the mission of Re-Member, which has assisted the people of the Oglala Lakota Nation living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (SD) by not only providing material goods but also promoting change through building relationships. |
